Help & Information
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the expedition price?+
All Expedition History tours include accommodation (twin-share), most meals as specified in the itinerary, all ground transportation, entrance fees to all sites visited, and the services of your lead historian. International flights are not included unless stated, but we can recommend trusted travel partners to arrange these.
How many people are in each group?+
We keep all our expeditions to a maximum of 20 guests. This is a deliberate choice — small groups allow for private access to sites, more personal attention from your historian, and the kind of spontaneous, in-depth conversations that make an expedition truly memorable.
What level of fitness is required?+
Most of our expeditions involve moderate walking — typically 3–6 kilometres per day over varied terrain, including uneven ground at historic sites. No special fitness level is required, but comfortable walking shoes and a reasonable level of mobility are recommended. Please contact us if you have specific mobility concerns and we will advise whether a particular expedition is suitable.
Who leads the expeditions?+
Every expedition is led by a qualified academic historian with specialist knowledge of the period and region you will visit. Many of our historians are published authors, university lecturers, or consultants to major museums and documentary productions. You will find detailed profiles of our historians on the Our Historians page.
Do I need travel insurance?+
Yes — comprehensive travel insurance is required for all Expedition History guests. Your policy should cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and personal liability. We recommend taking out insurance at the time of booking to protect your deposit. We are happy to recommend reputable travel insurance providers on request.
What is the typical age range of guests?+
Our guests range from their 30s to their 80s, with the majority in the 50–70 age bracket. We welcome guests of all ages who share a genuine passion for history. Expeditions are designed to be intellectually stimulating and physically accessible for a wide range of ages and fitness levels.
How far in advance should I book?+
We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for our most popular departures such as the Normandy D-Day and Western Front expeditions. Many departures sell out 6–12 months in advance. A deposit of 20% secures your place, with the balance due 90 days before departure.
Can I join as a solo traveller?+
Absolutely — a significant proportion of our guests travel solo. We can arrange single-room accommodation (a single supplement applies) or match solo travellers who are happy to share. Solo travellers often find our small-group format ideal, as the shared passion for history creates an immediate sense of community.
Do you offer private tours for groups?+
Yes. We offer fully bespoke private expeditions for families, alumni groups, schools, universities, and corporate organisations. Private tours can be tailored in terms of destination, duration, depth of focus, and budget. Please visit our Private Tours page or contact us directly to discuss your requirements.
What happens if a departure is cancelled?+
In the rare event that we need to cancel a departure (typically due to insufficient numbers or unforeseen circumstances), we will offer you a full refund or the opportunity to transfer to an alternative departure at no extra cost. We always endeavour to give as much notice as possible.
